"Here's to the little kid in all of us"
I’m enjoying a visit with my family this week so I’m taking the Thanksgiving holiday a little early. Here’s a poem that can easily be construed as one of thanksgiving when looking back over the years and realizing how important baseball has been in my life.
Dreams and Things
- If you had told me way back then
- That baseball diamonds filled with men
- Would somehow make my life a den
- Of hopes and dreams and acumen
- I doubt I would have listened.
- That memories from way back then
- of Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays,
- Of Whitey Ford and double plays
- Would somehow make my older days
- Much better than my childhood
- If only I’d have known
- The part that Casey at the Bat would play
- In forming memories that stay
- Through years of doubt and come what may,
- I would have paid attention.
- I would have done things differently
- Instead of wasting time on things
- That matter not what’s happening
- To others in the World that brings
- Much misunderstanding.
- I look back now on all those years
- And find I’m easily amused
- To think of how my time was used,
- As those around me were excused
- As though they really mattered.
- When in the end I realize
- The things that matter most in life
- Are those that bring fond memories,
- Of people, places, food and things,
- Of God and family gatherings,
- And Casey at the Bat.

I enjoyed this poem. I never realized how many of my favorite memories revolved around baseball, until just a few years ago when I rediscovered my interest in it.
