WHAT DOES IT TAKE?

What is it about baseball that makes you want to do cartwheels one day and jump off a bridge the next? It’s been about 7 years since I pretty much walked away from the game or at least from the politics of the game. I still have all the stuff; the photo’s, newspaper clippings, letters and memorabilia tucked away and of course it’s always available on the internet when a wave of nostalgia overcomes me. Tonight changed all that. As soon as tonight’s Giants/Mariners game was over I had this overwhelming compulsion to head to my trusty computer and “post”! And it wasn’t just one thing. It was everything. It started when the All Star pick for the Giants (just one) was announced. How can they do that? How can they pick just one? How about Yaz or Rogers or Matos or, especially after tonight, Sabol?

The baseball part of my family lives in the Seattle area so I tried to pay attention and it was easy. ‘Twas an okay game until the 9th inning when Seattle broke it wide open. So when Blake Sabol came to bat, thoughts immediately turned to his earlier at bat when his homer was responsible for the only Giants runs of the game. What if? If only! And that’s when it happened. He did it again. He brought the game within one run of going into overtime. But he didn’t and it didn’t and the game was soon over.

So what does it take to make an old lady throw down the gauntlet and take up again that worthy cause of spreading the word for love of the game? Ask Blake Sabol. I’m sure he’ll do it again. He is after all, not to take anything away from the current pick, an All Star in the making.
